Pablo Gaviria Escobar: Real Story - Fictional portrayal

Pablo Escobar`s ID
Pablo Escobar`s ID.

This post is among the hardest posts i ever decided to write.

I started writing about his story a few times and deleted what i wrote, as it seemed unfit. Why? Writing about Pablo Escobar is not an easy task. It seems like we know everything and yet, we know nothing. And again you may ask why? The answer is simple most of our knowledge is based on Hollywood storytelling, TV series and information based on the american side of the story. But as we learnt from my post on Marilyn Monroe (The real Marilyn Monroe) not everything is as Hollywood tells it to be. With Hollywood movies and TV series we see some presistent problems such as: inconsistencies with the story, time lines being messed up, family relations being messed up and many more issues.
The Escobar story falls victim of the usual mishaps with story writing the most - some inconsistencies are minor while other are huge.
There are many myths surrounding mr.Escobar.

The begging of Pablo Escobar

Pablo Emilio Gaviria Escobar was born on 01.12.1949 to middle class family, with six siblings in  the city of Rionegro, Colombia (around 50km away from Medellin). His mother – Hermilda de los Dolores Gaviria Berrío was a teacher and his father – Abel de Jesús Escobar Echeverri was a farmer ( he was in the cows and horses trade, when his stock got sick he lost the farm he had inherited).

El patron was ambitios and his strong personality was showing right from the start - his plan was to earn his first million by the age of 22. At the begging his crimes were small, street scams, fake lottery tickets, selling contraband cigarettes and stealing cars. A popular belief is that around 1962 he used to steal gravestones and then sell them, which is not true. His brother claims that the gravestones were not stolen but taken away from people who has not paid for the site.
Soon afterwards he entered the realm of kidnapping and drug dealing and worked his way up to become the undisputed ruler in Medellin.

The birth of Medellin Cartel

The first time Escobar stepped into more serious crime was in 1971 when he kidnapped important executive in Medellin, for a ransom of 100,000$ ( Nowadays that will be close to $630,891.75 (american $)). In a lot of movies we see Pablo suddenly rich, with a big group of smuggler and at the prime of his rule as a drug lord.
His start was not so sudden his first boss in the drug world was Alvaro Prieto by the age of 26 he had already deposited around 3 million dollars.
His sister recalls that one day Pablo showed up wearing leather jacket, he asked his mother to sew in some pockets on the inside of it. So he can protect his money, also the pockets were there so Escobar could smuggle cocaine paste from Peru.
Yes in the begging cocaine came from Ecuador and Peru, Pablo had to drive his car there, bringing cocaine to his home country, then preparing it in a house in Medellin for distribution to other countries. He managed to fly under the radar for a few years because he was very discreet, something today`s drug lords fail at.

1977 Mugshot of Pablo Escobar
At the age of 27 was his first arrest, and the mug shot was the most hated photo by Pablo, because he thought at the time that smiling will make him look less like a criminal. At the start of his empire, Pablo would personally fly planes to Panama, along the drug smuggling routes into the United States, he manages to smuggle 80 tones of cocaine. By 1975 he orders his first assassination related to his cocaine empire. Rival drug lord, is killed in the Medellin in order for Pablo to take over cocaine smuggling in the USA.
The reign of Pablo as  El Zar de la Cocaína (The Tsar of Cocaine) was 17 years.

The prime of the Medellin Cartel

Jaime Gaviria - his cousin, remembers that the export of drugs boomed, from 5 kilos to 1000 kilos in the span of three years. He adds that Pablo only took care of distribution and he was very imaginative and creative with it, if they needed to change a route he wold grab a map and figure out another route, choosing the right pilot and so on.

His cousin was not only creative with routes but also with way to smuggle and conceal drugs, he was the fist to smuggle drugs with submarines!  This is around the time when the business exploded and they would smuggle 15 tones a day. Pablo Escobar had a whopping 750 000 employees (he had more employees than Dominos, Google and Fedex combined) with the enterprise earning 70 million dollars a day, more than enough to subsidize the massive enterprise and wild desires the Escobars had, including private zoos. Pablo Escobar would bought more air plains and submarines in order to smuggle more cocaine. A Boeing 727s, strip out all the passenger seats and fly up to 10 tons per flight into the U.S via Norman’s Cay, a shipping point in the Bahamas which made smuggling in the United States easier than ever. The island had everything Medellin needed: an air strip which provided easy access, a hotel where smugglers can sleep, a harbor another path for drug smuggling, and a refrigerated warehouse to store cocaine.
Another big part of the prime of Medellin Cartel was El Senor`s most lavish private estate.
Helicopter at Hacienda Napoles
Helicopter at Hacienda Napoles (now the building is in ruins)
Hacienda Napoles is another legendary moment of the story. Iconic place. Its former glory now in ruins and dust, quiet the allegory of Pablo`s life. 7 pools, 3 zoos, private airport, bullring, kart racing and tennis court.
1978 was the year when the land for the infamous Hacienda Napoles was discovered, El Patron had paid for the 7,400-acre $63 million. A year later the hacienda was built, and it took 700 people to maintain it! On top of the main entrance you can still an air plane, this is the exact air plane Pablito personally piloted and used to smuggle cocaine in the USA.
With 750k employees, there was food on their tables, they had roof over their heads, children had places to play, learn and even heal. A big value in El Patron`s life was education, due to his behavior in his early years he was kicked out of school.
To this day there is a Neighborhood in Medellin, Colombia called Pablo Escobar.

Pablo in Politics

The begging of the end of Medellin cartel became reality when Pablo tried to set foot in Politics.
A game dirtier than cocaine, he had many opponents who would scrutinize him.

His political campaign was simple, in his own words "Through our program we would like to ask every citizen to practice civic mindedness. We want to touch every housewife’s heart so they don’t buy foreign products and support national industry that employs Colombians." He had plans to provide electricity to soccer fields, which he did. 40 soccer fields in poor neighborhood were lighted and available for the children to play on even at night. Pablo was earning enough money to be able to giveaway them to the poor, he managed to build a whole neighborhood, schools, hospital, playgrounds. Poor people thought he was a saint, and in a way he was.

The main reason why Escobar wanted to be elected to a seat in the Colombian congress was because he was fighting against extradition treaty between Colombia and America, his son recalls that his father would often say "I`d rather be in a grave in Colombia, rather than prison cell in the US".

Right around that time, while El Senor was causing polemics about the extradition, a newspaper decided to print the photo from his arrest. For a short time El Patron had a seat in the Congress, which granted him a political visa for the USA, his son had mentioned many times that they went to Disneyland. His father never concealed his true identity while going in and out of the States,  El Magico even went to see the White House with his son.

At the time of his political freedom he managed to buy and enjoy his a properties in Miami, Florida. One of them pictured below. Just like any other Pablo related thing, the gorgeous  mansion was destroyed by its new owner. Who believes that it was owned by true evil, but before the new owner demolished the Escobar`s former estate he made sure to search every corner and stone in the house for either money or cocaine. All he found was a packet of white substance which turned out not to be cocaine and a safe, that ended up being was stolen.
Due to the fact that he got elected for a seat in the Parliament, he was the official governmental representative of Colombia when Felipe González was sworn in as Prime Minister of Spain in 1982.

Pablo`s life in politics was short lived, in 1989 after the assasination of his main politic opponent the minister of Justice - Rodrigo Lara Bonilla. His career came to an end and he was on the run.
La Cathedral

After a long fight with authorities Pablo Escobar decided that it was finally time to surrender. But in true El Padrino style it had to be on his own terms. His terms were simple: no extradition treaty should be signed and no authorities in a radios of 3 miles plus he will be in a cell in private prison (specifically build for the purpose). His prison cell, like his life was not the usual. La Cathedral had football pitches,TVs, satellite phones, fax, bar, Jacuzzi, disco room, doll house for his daughter, transmitters and even waterfall.

Pablo`s prison

The government of Colombia was starting to get worried that the life Pablo led in prison was not that restricted so they decided to move him, to a more strict prison conditions. During his escape only one guard was shot. There were not altercations, simply due to the sheer greatness of El Patron`s talent to think ahead of time. According to a story written by his son La Cathedral had a weak point in one of its walls, the mix of concrete was made intentionally weaker so it only would take a few kicks to make a whole in the wall.
They had broken their promise and Pablo broke his.

Pablo on the run

One of the biggest achievements in his life was his family, that suffered the most from his enterprise. When he was on the run he was not able to see them out of fear that something might happen. His son recalls that they were moved every two days to different locations, and once while still with Pablo their apartment building was bombed, a hit the head of the Escobar family did not took lightly. While in hiding he and his family had no access to his money, they could not even afford a bag of rice, while the fortune amounted 21 billion dollars. Poverty amidst fortune Juan Pablo remembers  "I was hidden by my father ... We were literally surrounded by millions of dollars. But we were hungry because no one had the freedom to go out and buy food. That was a powerful life lesson—powerful enough to turn me away from crime. The seventh richest man on earth. Right from this time of hiding comes the myth that he burnt 2$ million to keep his family warm. His son claims that his father never burnt the money, but his father said it that due to the lack of access to money and the danger, his money were only good to set a fire with. Pablo was dedicated father and probably at the time felt helpless.

The family

At the age of 25 he falls in love with his neighbor. Maria Victoria Henoa (Vicky) is 13 at the time, and her family is against their relationship. Despite that two years later Pablo and Vicky got married, no 24.February of 1977 Maria Victoria gave birth to Juan Pablo Escobar (now Sebastián Marroquín) and she made him the happiest man on earth. She recalls that Pablo used to love his son a lot.

His son recalls that his father was honest with him. At the age of 7 he knew that his father was a criminal and he even knew about some of the deaths Pablo had ordered. At different occasion the father had displayed different kinds of drugs and explained to his son the different types, urging him not to try, but even he wanted it was better to go to him. He also recalls that his father never changed much, he kept wearing the same brands of clothing he used to wear before he became rich, and if his children would display their fortune he would ground them.
'My father even threatened to kill his employees if they so much as smoked a joint in front of me,' he said.
This might sound outrageous to some people but i think he was a great father, judging from what i have seen on interviews with his son. One of the biggest and most values Pablo had were education, he wanted his children to be highly educated and he succeed in that aspect - his son Juan Pablo Escobar is now an architect.

His his sister Manuela was born 7 years later in 1984 and just like little Pablito she was very loved by her father and he would go to extremes to fulfill every little wish she had. When Manuela asked her father how much a billion dollars was, he responded “the value of your eyes, my princess.”There is not much information that comes directly from her, because she avoids public appearances.

The death of Pablo

On December 02 of 1993, just a day after he turned 44. Pablo Escobar took the decision to end his life and save the lives of his family. He knew his phone was being monitored and tracked so he called his family. Pablo would often say to his son that the phone meant death. He was tracked and a chase on a rooftop of a house in Medellin. His cousin Luzmila recalls that he woke up that day at 12 O`clock when she left him some lunch and he asked her to come back around 3. At five past 3 as she was approaching the house where he hid, events of the day unraveled, Pablo was laying on the rooftop, dead. His son recalls that his father would often tell him that if he finds himself surrounded by enemies he would kill himself before authorities have the chance to catch him. He would put a gun to his right ear and will shoot himself. On the infamous photo of Pablo on the rooftop we can see his Sig Sauer (9mm gun), lying next to its owner. Pablo often said that he would use when he puts an end to his own life. A famous quote by him is "I can replace things, but I could never replace my wife and kids."
The day Pablo Gaviria Escobar was buried 25,000 people showed up to pay their last respect to El Señor. 25,000 people wept and cried for their hero and may be 25,000 rejoiced that a villain had been stricken down.
After Pablo`s death his family was forced to leave Colombia and change their names. His son in a fit of rage after receiving the news about his father`s death threatens to kill his enemies and to this day he is sorry for his reaction that day, up until recently he was scared of going back to his home country.

Due to his mother`s brave actions and peaceful mindset, the family was no longer in danger. There is story of her meeting with Cali cartel, and gathered all of Cali cartel bosses and mafia, 40 people attended and she made a deal - they will take everything Pablo has earned and they will split it up amongst themselves. After that they fled to Argentina, where they lived in Privacy until one day their cover was blown and they faced jail. Juan Pablo (now Sebastian Marroquin) recalls that the authorities wanted the money the Cali Cartel and mafia bosses now had, they also wanted the Escobar family to betray Pablo, his mother being the bravest woman in Colombia never gave up her husband`s name and legacy.
16 years passed and his son was able to get back to Colombia, he seeks forgiveness from his father`s victim families. Rodrigo Lara Bonilla`s son had given his his forgiveness and was spotted recently attending a mass with Sebastian Marroquin in Colombia.

It has been 24 years since Pablo Escobar was shot, and his story still captivates millions of people all over the world. 10 documentaries, 10 movies 2 tv series and more than 20 books later and we still see a lot of fiction in the portrayal of Pablo Escobar as a human, father, son, husband, brother, boss, criminal.
One of the biggest fictions his son has caught on the big and small screen is who betrayed his father. Some of the TV series claim it was his wife - Maria, but in fact it was his mother and brother. Another great miss is the fact that Pablo`s wife was never called Tata, Narcos couldn`t even get right the team Escobar supported he supported Deportivo Independiente Medellin and not Atletico Nacional.
Often in those movies we see Pablo shunning away his kids, freely smoking weed. Truth is that the loved his children so deeply that he would end meetings if they showed up, he was even ready to bring Michael Jackson to Colombia for a birthday party for his son. Everyone was threatened that if his children saw them using drugs they would be killed. We see Pablo conceiving his identity while in the USA, he never did that. He entered and left US as Pablo Escobar, without any disguise. Maria Victoria Henao never used or bought a gun. Escobar never attacked the daughter of Gilberto Rodriguez at her wedding in fact the one attacking a family was Gilberto, he put a bomb in front of a building where the Escobar family was staying. It was believed that due to the power of the explosion Manuela had lost a significant percent of her hearing ability in one of her years, later it was made clear that not Manuel but Juan Pablo was the one who lost a percentage of his hearing. You can read more of the inconsistencies we see on TV here: 28 Mistakes Narcos TV series made.
Pablo good or bad is part of world history, and his story will keep our imagination wild. There will be more movies, books and TV series to come.
Pablo is always portrayed as ruthless and heartless person, with no remorse and yes i know he left a lot of dead bodies behind and i am paying my deep respect to the victims.Splashing money for the most outrageous cars, air planes and houses, but somehow we rarely see him as the good guy giving money to poor people, building houses and football stadiums and as loving father and husband.
Some of the movies show Pablo being rude to his parents, something he never did.
Hopefully one of them will portray Pablo as well as his son`s movies and books represent his father. A movie directed by Juan Pablo is: Sins Of My Father and his books are :  My father Pablo Escobar: My Father and Pablo Escobar. Il padrone del male. Another movie that i loved was Los archivos privados de Pablo Escobar
